How To Talk To Your Tween About Money

Teaching financial literacy has been my passion and over the years I've had an opportunity to speak to parents who want to know how to talk to their children about money and want tips to help them become more independent before they go off into the real world.

For many parents it seems like just yesterday that your child was on their way to kindergarten, but now that they're in middle school things seem to be happening way to fast. Tweens seem to go from having play dates to group movie dates right in front of your eyes.

It's estimated that the average American has about a three percent "cushion" in their budget for things to go wrong; which sure doesn't leave much wiggle room for real emergencies like a busted transmission or extended time off from work.

From the looks on peoples faces at the gas pumps and the quiet chatter I hear as we all wait our turn to pay a kings ransom for a paupers portion of gas; I know that the increase in gas prices over the last six months is causing serious financial strain on the American consumer.

I really like that gecko GEICO (try saying that five times fast) uses in some of its ads - apparently so do millions of Americans who have switched to the cool insurance company that promises hassle-free, low cost service.

But can GEICO really save you money on your car insurance? Well, that all depends on a three-digit number that is assigned to you by the credit scoring system that they use.

Silly you, most of your life you've been told to stay under the speed limit, keep the amount of parking tickets you get to a minimum, and always avoid accidents and by doing all of the right things you'd have a good insurance rate. Right. Well...not exactly.
